Women have thier own way of expression. Definetly. Carole King, Jackie DeShannon, Laura Nyro and Emmylou Harris are ladies who shaped the style of what we can call female performing and songwirting, at least theoretically. Biographies of Carole, Jackie and Laura integrated in "The Grace of My Heart" ('90s movie) nicely support what I just said. Then there were Patti Smith, Rickie Lee Jones, Joan Jett, Debbie Harry, The Raincoats, Bangles, Blake Babies... Girls were joining their forces and making most powerful records. Today girls rule. Recent succeses of Geraldine Fibbers, Sleater Kinney, Lucinda Williams, Liz Phair and Holly Cole leave most of the boys' music eight miles lower. Ok, on the other hand we can witness Britaney Spears' and Mariah Carrey vertigo of popularity, but the music industry exploits their feminity making them role models for young girls, rather than exploit their possibly hidden talents. There are some new names around that I would like to point here, like Melissa Sigler from Louisiana, Amanda Jones from Atlanta, Damian Child from Australia and others. I would also like to describe Phranc who is around for a decade, but she never acheived deserved attention. Just follow these nice links to find out what may be the future of female sound.

That was from me. And now an expertise by my sister Snezana Zabic.

Girls Rule

Do you do it for fun
do it in a fit
do you do it before
you write about it?

X - Ray Spex

I'm writing this in Prague, where I live, and although I love it, I must admit that Prague is in the middle of nowhere as far as music is concerned. But sometimes we're reminded that Prague is on thus planet. Like the other night, when I went with my friend Dragan to see a band called Victory at Sea. They're from Boston; they're two girls plus a boy on the bass. Dragan and I liked them a lot. My cheers went especially to the drummer. "She didn't even unbutton her sleeves!" Dragan said with admiration. The drummer wore a flannel shirt with long sleeves and played drums with force, precision and an almost melodic feeling.

I just want to say something to the girls who run into this web site. Hi sisters. Maybe you have brothers who scornfully disdain your first attempts to play a few chords/bass lines/drum rhythms and your first attempts to write songs. Don't take any shit - keep rocking. Play Sleater Kinney's "I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone" and Chubbies' "Boys Don't Matter" over and over again, LOUD. Anger is fucking good material when you start doing your own thing. But don't forget other emotions. You've got stories to tell, so go ahead and tell them and don't hold yourself back. Then there's Style. Or there isn't and that's not good.

Zaba has picked these women with anger, emotions, good stories and Style. Learn and enjoy! So will I. GIRLS! RULE! Sisterly greetings,

Zxcana
