OUTDOOR RECOMMENDATIONS

Coordinated Event: DESERT JEEP TOUR AND HORSEBACK RIDING

When: Saturday, 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM

How long: 5 hours

Description: Horseback Riding With Jeep Tour of the Sonoran Desert

Cost: $102 per person (includes tax)

Time-line:

8-9:30am: Travel in open-air vehicles to McDonalds Ranch and Stables for a one hour horseback ride through the scenic beauty of the desert

10am-1pm: Desert jeep ride through the Tonto National Forest, followed by a nature walk that provides a close-up view of cactus (including Saguaro) and other desert flora and fauna, and a drive down to the picturesque Verde River.

HIKING

Scottsdale is known as a golf destination, and there are MANY options (190 courses) to choose from.  Following are some sites to check out:

·        Free 45-minute docent-guided tour: Daily at noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m.

·        Audio Tour: Provides roughly 45 minutes of recorded information about selected pieces of artwork throughout the galleries. Includes interviews with Native American artists.  Cost is $4 per person, or two for $6.

PHOENIX ART MUSEUM

Location: Northeast corner of McDowell Road & Central Avenue in downtown Phoenix (very close to the Heard Museum). Click here for driving directions.

Hours: 10am-5pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. 10am-9pm Thursday. Closed Monday.

Costs: $7 adults, $5 adults 65 and over & full-time students, $2 ages 6-17, FREE children under age 6 Free to all on Thursdays.

Tours: One-hour tours are led by Museum-trained volunteers (docents). Free with Museum General Admission; leave from the tour desk in Museum lobby. Featured Exhibition Tour starts at 1pm.

  • Panorama Tour
    Time: Daily at 9, 10 & 11 am
    Length: 1 hour

    Description: This one-hour tour introduces visitors to Wright's brilliant ability to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces.
  • Summer Insights Tour
    Length: 90 minutes
    Time: Daily at 9:30, 10:30, or 11:30 am, and 12, 1, 2, 3 or 4 pm
    Cost: $16/person ($14 seniors, students & children 4-12)
    Description: Also covers the Taliesin West Living Room, called the "Garden Room" by Wright, and visitors have the opportunity to sit in Wright-designed furniture.
  • Behind the Scenes Tour
    (reservations required at least two days in advance – please call ahead)
    Length: 3 hours
    Time: Monday, Thursday, & Saturday mornings only starting at 9 am
    Cost: $25/person
    Description: An intimate look at Taliesin West complete with mid-morning refreshments in the colorful Taliesin Fellowship dining room, visits to all the spots on the Insights tour including the Garden Room, plus a walk to the historic Sun Cottage.

The Desert Botanical Garden offers the world’s largest collection of arid-land plants from deserts of the world in a unique outdoor setting. The Garden has more than 50,000 accessioned plants throughout its five thematic trails, which illustrate topics such as conservation, desert living, plants and people of the Sonoran Desert and desert wildflowers.

*An alternative to the Desert Botanical Garden that is a bit further away (an hour from Phoenix) but VERY beautiful, is the Boyce Thompson Arboretum
