Zadorozny: Our Ukrainian Cousins
Zadrozny is the orginal Polish spelling of our surname, though anyone who has this name is familiar with the 100s of possible alternative spellings. I think most Americans are just intimidated by two "z"s in a name! As soon as people think its Polish, they immediately want to add that "-sky". So we often become Zadarsky or Zardoski.
This situation has not changed much in the last 100 or so years. Our great-grandparents dealt with the same kind of problem when they came to this country. This is very visible in the Ellis Island Immigration records that are now available online. I've already discovered over a dozen different spellings of Zadrozny, and I'm sure there are many more.
In addition to these "creative" spellings of our surname, there is another interesting variation: Zadorozny. This is the Ukrainian and Russian spelling of the Polish name Zadrozny.
As shown on the Zadrozny map of Poland on this site, there are several thousand Zadroznys still living in Poland. If you examine this map closely, you will notice that the largest concentrations of Zadroznys are in the eastern and central-eastern part of the country. The borders of Poland and all of eastern Europe have changed dramatically over the years. With these changing borders, it can be expected that there families like the Zadroznys have found themselves at various times in Poland, in Germany, in Russian, in the Soviet Union, in the Ukraine, to name a few.
While the connections between the Zadrozny families of Poland and the Zadorozny familes of Russia and the Ukraine are unclear, it is reasonable to suggest that there are certainly similarities and relationships likely do exist. While the focus of the Zadrozny SRC has typically been the Zadrozny family name, we are happy to include Zadorozny family information in our database and other resources.
