This idea of marriage has become outdated. In the old days when marriages were arranged it made perfect sense to have a legally binding contract in which the duties of each party were duly recited. These days very few marriages are arranged. Perhaps I have an overly romantic view of what marriage is supposed to represent but... I believe marriage is an undertaking to be attempted only by two people in love. The problem is... It is when two people are truly in love when marriage is completely unneccesary. Why would two people need a piece of paper telling them what they already know? Why would two people that couldn't live without one another need to be legally bound? And quite clearly... If you later find out you're not in love... There is that messy matter of divorce... of course... if you're not in love... you shouldn't have gotten married in the first place... ah... hindsight is 20/20.
Here's a novel idea... Marriage licenses with expiration dates... You know... you get married... and in 3 years you have to go get your license renewed... and if you don't pass the test... well.
