What is biotechnology?
What is Biotechnology? Our next step, into a new era, the era of biotechnology…. Biotechnology simply means "applied biology." The application of biological knowledge and techniques to develop products. It may be further defined as the use of living organisms to make a product or run a process. This rapidly expanding technique has found its place of application in plants, animals and humans. Presently it has indeed come of age to display its importance and specify the newer tools of genetic science. Tremendous effort and research is being enforced to modify the genetic materials of living cells so they will produce new substances or perform new functions.
Biotechnology in IIUM
We offer Bachelor of Biotechnology (BBT). On this degree,
you will study various disciplines which include biochemistry, microbiology,
molecular cell biology, cell and tissue culture, genetics, genetic engineering,
bioprocess, medical biotechnology and protein biotechnology. New fields of study
could indeed go astray, therefore to protect this field, law and ethics in biotechnology
has been incorporated.
The nature of this programme has been further enhanced with the essence of Islamic
virtue, the specialty of International Islamic University Malaysia, making it all
the more unique and appropriate to be catered to the Islamic world.
The Department of Biotechnology at International Islamic University Malaysia ,
is active, rapidly expanding and exploring new frontiers with strong foundations in
research and teaching. It is equipped with excellent academic staffs running major
research groups, paving way for students to obtain latest knowledge and securing well
defined research areas. We have presently identified three areas of concentration such
as Food Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology and Marine Biotechnology.
In the near future, our department would include more concentrations such as Medical
Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. We hope to make you a highly demanding scientist in
the scientific market. Our service to you is your service to the Ummah.
