TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

Recommended are the two types of corn hybrids, the single-cross and three-way-cross hybrids. The single cross hybrid is a cross of a single-cross hybrid with an inbred line. Depending on "farmer's choice", these hybrids are recommended in support to the GMA-Corn production program in the corn cluster areas of Region IX.

 ECONOMIC BENEFITS

NET INCOME PER HECTARE (PhP)
 Wet Season Dry Season
 Single-cross 46,760.00 to 57,175.00  48,100.00 to 49,300.00
 Three-way-cross 27,740.00 to 50,450.00  28,860.00 to 50,250.00

ADVANTAGES

Both single-cross and three-way-cross hybrids are genetically superior in terms of yield performance over the existing improved and traditional corn varieties which are generally low yielder.

YIELD INCREASE

Using the single-cross hybrids in wet season will increase yield by 7.18 to 8.56 t/ha while in the dry season by 6.67 to 7.83 t/ha. By planting the three-way cross hybrids, yield will increase from 6.72 to 7.62 t/ha in the wet season while 7.50 to 8.17 t/ha in the dry season.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS

Single-cross hybrids in the wet season will give a Return on Capital (ROC) of 224 to 275% while in the dry season, from 230-236%. Using the single-cross hybrids, the ROC varies from 221-246% in the wet season while in the dry season from 239-255%. Farmer's variety has an ROC of 3% in the wet season and -14% in the dry season.

LAND PREPARATION

Prepare the land thoroughly by plowing and harrowing twice at two weeks interval. Make furrows at 75 cm apart and apply basally the recommended amount of fertilizers based on the result of the laboratory analysis.

PLANTING

Plant at one seed per hill along the furrows spaced 20 cm apart. Cover the seed with 2-3 cm of fine soil.

WEEDING AND OFF-BARRING

Do spot-handweeding and thereafter undertake shallow cultivation or off-barring 14-18 days after planting (DAP).

SIDEDRESSING AND HILLING-UP

At 25-30 DAP, sidedress the plants with the recommended nitrogenous fertilizer. Do hilling-up to cover the fertilizer and control the remaining weeds.

CONTROL OF CORNBORER

Apply Trichogramma at the rate of 80 cards/ha at 25-30 DAP. Repeat another application of 80 cards/ha one week later if more cornborer eggmasses are observed. Spray any recommended insecticides if cornborer infestations persist

HARVESTING

Harvest from 95-100 days after planting or when most of the ears are fully matured.
