sweet Cindy

When I was eighteen my friend Cindy decided that the only way to escape her troubles was suicide. There were signs enough, but being young I just didn't understand. I still feel the pain from this loss after thirty years.I wrote this poem in 1969 when flying over the mountains. My tribute to Cindy.

~~~Peace be with you~~~
SWEET CINDY
Not long ago I saw a tree
so green and covered with leaves
Its branches stretched far and wide
in search of a life to lead
The tree was young in years they said,
You'd never know just to look
Because that tree reached far beyond
the years of growth it took
Amazed by the exceptions of the tree
I watched it closely each day
I came to love and cherish that tree
and take care in any way.
One night while I lay sleeping
a mighty storm rose in the sky
a flash of light, a thunder sound
my tree began to die.
Each night in prayer I'd ask of God
one favor he might hand
to restore the beauty of my tree
so it may live again
But still the tree wilted more
till all that was left was dust
With it went my heart
my hopes of life and trust
One morning I woke smiling
How unusual is this I thought
And by some force beyond my control
Again to the scene I was brought
The air was clean and fresh there
The sun was shining bright
And as I glanced where my tree once stood
I saw a brilliant light
I went closer to have a look
and much to my surprise
A new tree so small and dainty
My happiness brought tears to my eyes
I knew my prayers were answered
In a very special way
God gave me a new life to watch over
for the one he took away.
Although the memories of the first
will never be forgotten by me
I'll give the new all the love of the old
How beautiful my lovely tree
