World of Care Bears
Original the Care Bears (or Project 2, as Strawberry Shortcake was the first project) were a line of greetings cards in 1981 by American Greetings. In 1983 they started producing the characters as toys, followed by other items, movies, books, and TV shows soon after.
1980s Classics
These bears are available in a number of sizes. They are easily recognizable by the heart-shaped pads on the bottom of the feet. Also a small plastic heart on the right side of the bum. A small curl of hair sticks out between the ears.
20th Anniversary Collector Items
There are currently several types being produced. They include:
The Classics: 8" beanies, 10" plush and 13" stuffed (this comes with a video)
The Retros: 8" beanies and 13" stuffed
The Classics are idealized versions, modern if you will. And the Retros are almost exactly like the ones from the 80s. Cousins are also being produced, but I have only seen them in the Retro versions so far.
Of course this list doesn't include all the other stuff out there, coloring books, blankets, pillows, lunch boxes, stickers, plastic figurines, etc. The books, movies and TV shows are even being re-released. The Care Bears are back in a big way!!
Currently, I would say you could buy them anywhere (like Wal-mart, Toys 'R Us, Hot Topic, etc...) except every time I look they are sold out! I wish I had more and I keep trying...but they are all out...every time...so good luck to anyone who wants these. Obviously it doesn't help they were producing new ones every 3 months. Now find them...good luck.
