Background of this Design
Detail of a 15th Century French Manuscript depicting the Roman Virgin Marcia, who it is said, scorned the typical occupations of women to become a painter and ivory carver. She is said to have been better than any man. Many women in the middle ages became artists, having been taught by either their father or husband. However, thier names are lost to us, because it was under the name of the husband or father that she was forced to paint.
