Zanshin Shotokan FAQ Top of page What is Zanshin Shotokan?

Zanshin Shotokan Karate - Do is a Karate club formed by the late Sensei Frank Nowak with the aim of maintaining a traditional martial arts base while incorporating realistic fighting techniques. The club provides a supportive atmosphere in which to learn.

The Japanese word 'Zanshin' can be translated to mean 'remaining spirit'. It means that even though a fight, a demonstration or a movement has been completed, the spirit or alertless must remain so that you can react to sudden change, or return to calm.

Shotokan is one of the more widespread Karate styles worldwide. Funakoshi Gichin Sensei is acknowledged as the pioneer of modern Shotokan Karate - Do, and it is this style that is taught at Zanshin Shotokan.

Sports Karate is an important part of development of the Karateka with one’s skills being matched against skilled opponents in competition combat situations. Competition karate is practised in two forms, ‘Kumite’ (free fighting) or ‘Kata’, where one is judged on technique and form. Zanshin members take part in competitions organised by the NSW Karate Federation and the Australian Karate Federation.
