Yes, Free Energy

I kid you not. Follow the steps below and you will have freed a lot of energy and usually save money too.

Ten tips for Carbon Haters

  1. For any indoor incandescent light you run more than 4 hours a day on average, switch to a vacuum flourescent rated at 1/4 to 1/3 the Watts.
  2. Set your clothes drier to shut off 5 or 10 minutes sooner. Your clothes need to dry, not bake.
  3. In winter, start your car and let it idle for a minute (that is all it needs. Really). Then drive slowly to get fluids flowing in the transmission and the rest of the drive train.
  4. When you get to a parking lot, park in any available spot. Driving around waiting for something more ideal will just fatten your butt and burn more gasoline.
  5. Rake your grass and leaves by hand unless you have an 'acerage'.
  6. Order a pizza. The energy spent warming up your own oven and cooking a pizza far exceeds that of the local pizza shop. They probably make better pizza than you anyway.
  7. Make the coolest room in your house or apartment the computer room. With 300+ Watts of heat from the PC, you can turn down the heat in the rest of the house.
  8. Work from home - if you can. Big savings on energy by not travelling to work. You will probably eat more as the refigerator is always nearby, so you have to be able to exercise self control.
  9. Use a block heater on your car in winter? Get a timer and use it. You only need it to rn an hour before starting the car, and that only on nights where the temperature is -20C or lower.
  10. Don't leave your TV on the music/weather channel - big waste of energy. Get a radio or mp3 player.

Ten More Energy Saving Tips

These ones are a bit harsh, but hard times require stern measures.

  1. Got kids? They run a really high metabolism and produce lots of surplus heat. You can reduce or even cut off the heat to their bedrooms to save money. Don't reduce air conditioning though as they can be quite whiny.
