pH probe: One of the most sensitive tests for showing reflux. A small plastic tube is inserted thru the nasal into the esophagus, it is taped securely and attached to a portable recording device, which records the amount of acid and how many times refluxed. Usually done for a 24hr time period (although sometimes less).
Modified Barrium swallow (swallow study): Test done to verify/rule out aspiration and swallowing problems. Test is similar to an Upper GI but main focus is mouth/throat area. Usually a SLP (speech-language pathologist) or OT (occupational therapist) is present to evaluate the swallow function. Variety of textures and liquid consistancies are given to evaluate.
Upper Endoscopy (with biopsy): During this test the child is sedated and a flexable plastic tube with a camera at the end is inserted in the mouth, thru the throat, and into the esophagus and stomach area. During the test the esophagus and stomach walls are inspected for signs of errosion and inflammation. Biopsies are usually taken and are pinhead-sized pieces of the surface tissue. Test takes about 15 mins to perform, although sedation and preparation takes a little while longer - estimated hr total. Results from visual part of endoscopy are immediate, biopsies take a few days. Done to detect: esophagitis, gastric imflammation, structual issues, hiatal hernias, ulcers.
