Lakers By A Field Goal

  • Wild 9th inning gives Lakers second win over Braves, 16-13

Saturday's Southwestern Division battle between Mukwonago and Farmington wouldn't be classified as pretty. Especially if you are a fan of good pitching. The two teams each collected 16 hits, including 11 for extra-bases, in the Lakers 16-13 victory in Farmington.

The Lakers struck in the top of the first off of Phil Hochmuth. Todd Grafenauer, Eric Purcell, and John Schultz, put together base hits equalling two runs. The Braves answered in the bottom half. After consecutive singles by Nick Heiting and Matt Padron, Billy Owens doubled to centerfield scoring two, and would later score on a Scott Hueckman ground out.

The Lakers answered right back with four in the top of the second. Tom and Todd Grafenauer each had 2-run singles. The Braves would continue the trend adding two more in the bottom of the inning. Matt Zickert singled, Heiting scored him with a single of his own, and Owens drove in Heiting with a base hit.

The Lakers extended their 6-5 lead in the top of the fourth, with a 3-run homerun by John Rebholtz onto Highway D. But the Braves kept fighting adding one of their own in the bottom of the frame, and tied the game at 9 in the fifth, after doubles by; Hueckman, Todd Chingway, Zickert, and James Melchior plated three runs.

In many ways it was a typical Saturday LOL contest...no pitching. The game entered the ninth inning deadlocked at 10.

The Lakers singled and walked their way to a six-spot off of Jereme Harder. The Braves wouldn't go down with out a fight. Farmington scored three of their own off of Nate Rebholtz, before Nate Gray grounded out to end the game. On this day of offense, Have-a-day-Gray ended 0-for-6 with 3 strikeouts.

The starting pitchers did not figure into the decision after both allowed nine runs. But the funniest part of this day was Opie's pre-game plea for a position change. Better watch out what you wish for Op, or is that Jeff Kent? The ball will find you.

The third straight loss drops Farmington to (5-7), with a very important contest in Genesee tommorrow.
