Braves For Real

  • Farmington comes up big, showing playoff potential winning 3 of last 4

The Rome Raiders came into Sunday's contest with the Braves very confident. Even after exhausting their ace Steve Perkins Friday night in the Fort Tourney. This was the first look Rome had at the up-start Braves, and they figured lefty Dan Turner would be enough to secure the victory.

Turner frustrated Brave hitters yielding just two unearned runs in his first five innings of work. The Braves countered with Phil Hochmuth, who cleary was not on top of his game, and was chased after four, giving up four runs.

The Braves cut the lead to one in the top of the sixth. After back-to-back singles by Billy Owens, and Nate Gray, they executed a double steal of to put both runs in scoring position. They ended up scoring on third baseman DJ Pangborn's throwing error.

After an unsuccessful relief stint by Scott Hueckman, the Braves gave the ball to Jereme Harder. The change of pitchers brought a change of fourtune for Farmington. Harder silenced the Rome bats, while the offense prepared their comeback.

The middle of the Braves line-up struck again. Owens lead off with a double, Gray singled and stole second base. Both scored on Hueckman's double, chasing Turner. Aaron Adsit relieved Turner and escaped the inning with no further damge.

Trailing 7-6 in the ninth, James Melchior lead-off the inning reaching on an E4. Nick Heiting followed with a hit-by-pitch. After an unsuccessful sacrifice attempt by Padron, Owens lined a single into left field, tying the game at 7. Rome's defense would encounter another blunder, as they tried to double-up the speedy Nate Gray to no avail, allowing Heiting to score the go-ahead run. Hueckman singled in Gray to finish the rally and giving the Braves a 9-7 lead.

Harder finsihed off the Raiders in the ninth, picking up his first career L.O.L. victory. The win ups the Braves record to (3-4).
