The Miniseries

The Sci Fi Channel, annouced earlier this year that it would be premiering the new miniseries, Earthsea in December. When I heard, I was very excited - since The Lord of the Rings movies did so well, I've been hoping that someone would take up the Earthsea challenge. While the miniseries is not airing until early December, there is a lot known about Earthsea already - while I already have a page for news about Earthsea, I thought it would be fun to comment on what is already known.

The Cast:

So far, the casting intrigues me, though I know some fans are worried about the casting of Ged & Tenar in particular. I'm very happy with the casting of Danny Glover as Ogion and the participation of Issabella Rosselini - these two are wonderful actors, and I think they'll do a spectacular job. I'm not too famliar with Shawn Ashmore, who plays Ged, except for his one turn as Iceman in XMen 2. I think it will be interesting to see him arise to the challege - and see someone who is a certain age show the learning and growth process that Ged goes through in the books. Kristen Kruek is casted to play Tenar - if you're a scifi/fantasy fan, you've probably seen her on Smallville on the WB. Since I've only seen her as Lana Lang - I think it will be really interesting to see how well she plays an angry and conflicted young woman. There's been some discussion about the fact that many of the characters are white instead of dark skinned (as in the original novels). I have to say that this doesn't bother me as much as it does other people - I realize that this is a miniseries, and nothing can compete with the pictures in my head (not the voices, the pictures). I'm going to wait and see (and hopefully, enjoy what I see!).

The Background:

The miniseries is based on A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan. Since these are my favorite two books of the series, I'm VERY MUCH looking forward to finally getting to see it! I also think this is very promising, because it opens the door for ANOTHER miniseries to be made - from The Farthest Shore and Tehanu. (This is the part where you cross your fingers). If you go and read the Q&A on the official site with Robert Halmi, Sr (Exec Producer), he even says this. Check it out here!

As more information is learned about the miniseries, I'll update my thoughts and ideas about what we know, what we don't, and what I hope to see!
