History
of BFL Throwoff- |
April
22, 2003- With the a new BFL season only a few weeks away, what
better time is there to reflect upon a BFL tradition, the Throwoff
Game. Ever since the BFL began, the Throwoff Game has been the most
anticipated game of the year next to the BFL Bowl. So now we can
take a minute to look back the way that the BFL season has started
off dating back to the first BFL game in 1997.

Sparrows 42 |
In
the first ever BFL game Ken and Rich began the oldest rivalry
on a hot June afternoon. With Jay as the quarterback, Ken
and Rich battled back and forth with Ken scoring the first
ever BFL touchdown. The Sparrows were able to take a 21-point
lead over the Dragons off of a late interception in his own
end zone. While this game is not reflected in the BFL records,
it would be a shame to not to mention this great, monumental
game.

Celts 35 |
The
"official" first BFL game was played on an afternoon.
The temperature was in the upper 90s and may have been the
hottest weather for a BFL game ever. With Ken as the quarterback,
Howie was able to match every one of Rich's scores as Howie
would tie the game up at 35-35 mid way through the 3rd quarter.
However, neither team could continue to play in the extreme
heat as the Celts and Dragons would end the game in a tie.

In
what was the latest a BFL season would begin, the Koala and
Melody matched up in the start of the beginning of a new rivalry.
With new rules and new flags, the Koala scored their first ever
points against the tough to beat Melody. However, Jay would
take an 8 point lead with less than a minute to go. As time
expired Adam caught a medium pass and was yakled as he ran to
the goal line to give the Melody the win. This game also marked
the new tradition of showcasing an expansion team in the Throwoff
Game.

In
front of 12 people, the Mustangs would attempt to be the first
expansion team to win their first game. However, Adam held Aaron
to a field goal on his first possession. With a storm creeping
over the BFL field late in the game the Mustangs found them
selves down by 9 late in the 4th quarter. Aaron would catch
a touchdown and get the first ever 3 point conversion to tie
the game up. However, the speedy Koala, Adam, answered back
with a throwoff return with 40 seconds left in the game. On
Aaron's final series, Adam held him to 3 incomplete passes to

The
skies finally cleared up after on and off showers all day long
as the Bulldogs would debut against the Sparrows. In front of
a large attendance, the Bulldogs missed on a chance to tie the
game at 14 when Ken intercepted a pass. An ensuing touchdown
would give the Sparrows a 16 point lead. However, Andrew would
battle back making 3 consecutive 2 point conversions on three
touchdowns to make Ken's lead 7. But a late Sparrows field goal
would end the Bulldogs comeback as Ken would go on to start
his second 3-0 season and win it 74-65.

Fear

Gamblers 89 |
The
Gamblers would greet the Fear on a humid day for Throwoff 2002.
The Fear fell behind 7-3 and trailed 35-24 late in the first
half. However, the Fear cut the lead down to 35-31 with 3 seconds
to go in the half and began to build up some momentum. On the
Throwoff Mark got caught in his own end zone for a Fear safety.
To start off the second half Sean took his first lead of the
game 40-35. The two teams would exchange the lead numerous times
until Mark held Sean to a field goal to start off the 4th. On
the ensuing throw, the Gamblers returned the ball all the way
to take a 57-50 lead. Mark would then intercept his first of
two passes and take it all the way for a touchdown. The Gamblers
scored 40 4th quarter points to win the game 89-72, in the wildest
Throwoff Game yet.
