May
5, 2003- The 7th season of the Beginners Football League officially
begins on Saturday May 17th at 6pm. The Battlefield will be mowed
and painted as a sell out crowd is expected on what hopes to be
a great spring afternoon. The opening game will be the Sandstorm
against the Icebergs, who will be making their BFL debut. Unfortunately
this season's festivities will not be the same, as the 2003 season
is starting on a somber note. Long time quarterback Howie, "Gogo"
will be sidelined not just for this game but most likely until after
the June 4 All-star game. It seems Howie experienced severe migraines
during April and has been recovering since and will not be ready
to go. His absence may affect the play of the teams for the first
weeks as over the past seasons the teams have developed a relationship
with Howie. To this day the league has not yet determined who the
fill in quarterback will be, but hopes to make the decision soon.
The league and all the teams hope to see Howie back on the field
very soon.
The
2003 season is shaping up to be full of excitement with the return
of the All-star game and all the excitement leading up to the BFL
bowl. The Dragons are no longer in the BFL which makes this year's
race even more competitive. Every team coming into this season has
a chance for the playoffs, and that includes the newly arrived Icebergs.
Mark C is looking to make history in becoming the third franchise
to make the post-season in the inaugural year. Usually an expansion
team will have problems early on but with the Icebergs playing on
opening day, Mark C has a chance to make a statement and show the
rest of the league that he is here and will be in contention throughout
the season. This season the Fear, Knights, Crusaders and Sandstorm
should play better and make a run for the playoffs. The Congress
Bulldogs have a good chance for post-season but they need to find
a way to beat the Sparrows. The Sparrows will once again defend
their BFL championship and should be playing deep into the playoffs,
but the favorite to win it all this year are the Gamblers. With
the retirement of the Dragon's and the high powered offense of the
Gamblers, Mark K stands as the favorite for BFL Bowl VI. Just because
he is seen as the favorite does not mean he will be there at the
end, all 8 teams will probably be in contention until the final
weeks of the season and this could be one of the most exciting seasons
in the BFL.
Anything
can happen out on the Battlefield and the "High Powered Football"
action starts on May 17th.
