| BEST OF ABELARDE SANCTION 2000 AWARDS FRIDAY 1 DECEMBER |
| The annual highlight of the Abelarde Sanction's social calendar, with representatives from most of the bands who have played here during the past year gathering to shmooze and booze. The famously undemocratic voting process takes place via e-mail, with Taz the owner having final despotic say in cases where the tampering is too subtle to be condoned. The venue was packed out. Three of the front-running bands played, Left of Centre, Zen Arcade and Sharkbrother, with a special guest appearance by last year's Band of the Year, Damn the Icebergs, who rocked the place hard and heavy. Zen Arcade took five awards: Best Drummer (Andrew), Best Vocal Performance (Iain), Best Bassist (which Alisair shared with Steve Sharkbrother), Best Alternative Band and Groupies of the Year (Jo and Annette, you'll never live this down!) Definitely a night to remember (if only we could!). A great way to round off this year's engagements in Jo'burg and proof positive that Zen Arcade will continue upwards and onwards.
