A short, limited and entirely subjective list of things that caught my roaming eye - Alistair
BEST PUBS The Whammy Bar, Ocean Drive, Table View. Intimate size, pool table, live original bands. Reckless shooter country. Manic owners/hosts Bill & Matthew keep the party going till the last guy drops. The Bush Bar, Hangklip Hotel, Pringle Bay. Open air/partly thatched stone boma. Sea sand floor. Ed & Kaz play chilled East African blues and serve equally chilled Black Labels. Time is an illusion. Ronnie's Sex Shop, about 60km before Barrydale, on the R62 from Oudtshoorn towards Cape Town via Worcester. A tiny roadside attraction in the middle of nowhere that enjoys a minor cult following. Werner/Ronnie will serve you ice cold beer, with a game of darts and good food to revitalize the weary traveller. Some interesting graffiti - be sure to add yours. Rock Art Cafe - Oudtshoorn, drive in on the N12 and follow your nose past the museum and the giant ostrich egg (you can't miss it!). Awesome food, generous helpings. Rob, Eugene's co-owner, has an awesome collection of Blues music. Ask and ye shall receive.
GOOD TOURIST SPOTS Three Passes on the N9 down to George (beautiful hills) and the coastal strip from George to Knysna. The R44 coastal road from Gordons Bay to Pringle Bay - False Bay is expansive on your right. Look for river mouths and hidden beaches for a swim. Signal Hill, Cape Town provides an excellent spot for a quiet siesta, if you don't mind the beautiful view, golden sunset and tourists sipping wine next to your car. Hangklip Hotel, 1,5km through Pringle Bay - a cool relaxed vibe with the 454m Hangklip looming above the hotel. A little way past the hotel, the white dunes of Silver Sands are well worth visting for a few hours' solitary contemplation.
BEST CHEESEBURGER OK, like I said, this is a subjective guide. Behind Knysna's Saturday morning flea market, on the lagoon side, there is a bricked plaza. Go down the ramp towards the bandstand and there is a cafe on your left. Order the bacon & cheeseburger and a capuccino milkshake. Sorted.
