| JUNE 2000 Friday 9 June - Zen Arcade played at 206live, supporting Squeal's new line-up (Logan had taken over bass duties from Brett). The discipline of the past weekend's recording combined with the sheer volume of the sound system translated into a tight, powerful set. Despite inexplicable discrepancies between the soundcheck balance and the actual live sound, the band went over extremely well. Saturday 10 June. Back at RP Studios to mix down with Neal Snyman - this time in the M2 studio, with its Starship Enterprise desk. The mixathon went on well into the wee hours - the band finally tottered out into the winter air at 3am. The results were generally excellent - with a lush, yet punchy sound achieved on Crazy Over You and Step Back. Although Sister was pegged for mixing at a later date, Neal dove into a high octane mix that, although not polished to the same extent as the other two tracks, sounded suitably edgy, aggressive and ominous. In short, it kicked ass! Ever hyper-critical, the band acknowledged certain shortfalls in performance, but the nett result was a great tool for securing gigs, airplay and ... who knows? Friday 23 June. An excellent live gig at our "home" venue, Abelarde. The band was relaxed and played a powerful set, including the epic Up for the first time. Also on the bill was Lunge, who impressed with their riff-laden, well considered brand of rock music. |
