NOVEMBER 2000 Thursday 16 November - the Big Easy, Kensington. A most disappointing turnout, in spite of extensive advertising in local press and posters on the tree lined Langermann Drive. The support band, Lickerish, started late hoping that the crowd would grow. It didn't. Unfortunately, they still went on to play a very long set, by the time we got to play, I was pissed both ways. Noticing my less-than-rosy mood, Gavin (from 206) stood the band to a round of tequilas. This was my first in 8 years - and it went down like nectar. The aggro translated into a hard, mean set, a treat for the few punters who were still there.
Friday 17 November - Bugsy's, Fontainebleu. A smallish, but very supportive audience enjoyed two sets (our first double set gig). The second set was so well received, we ended up reprising most of the first as well (Time for some new songs is the consensus). Sound both on and off stage was killer - we sounded shit hot and played ditto.
Saturday 18 November - now in the throes of a two-day hangover, the band assembled at Abelarde Sanction for a soundcheck. Guest band was Pistol Fish, from Durban. Very nice band - tight and good songs. Powerful vocals (not unlike Iain ...must be the sea air that does it) and well defined dynamics. The place was pleasantly packed and the band rocked. Zen Arcade followed with a tight, hard set that impressed everyone. Afterwards, we shared a fine Durban cigar with the Pissed Fish, excellent fellows. Sharkbrother (minus violinist/warbler Sam) closed the evening, inviting Commander Drumslut to jam a song. The results were awesome, none more surprised than the Drumslut himself, who was utterly blitzed. A damn fine evening, by all standards, marred only slightly by the theft of Andrew's hubcaps (we catch you, you die, fuckers). |
