(They paid over 100.00 in 1938 for this radio)
Rescued from my parents damp basement in 1986.
Fully Restored Cabinet in 1987, Chassis in 1998.

This Radio features the famous "Robot Dial" or
"Shutterdial" also with electric tuning.
It is the little brother, (9 tube version) of the above 12 tube Zenith.
It is probably the finest example of original or "Mint" that I have come across.
Currently in fine working order, with all original electronics.
Only the top of the cabinet has some normal wear, overall cabinet with a few scratches.
The chassis only had some light dust that I wiped off with a wet towel,
which revealed the mint condition, looking like new.

This radio is an 8 tube console with original finish and electronics, in
working order.
The cabinet overall has a few scratches, and part of one of the three stripes on the top
is
rubbed out in one place, but is nice for an original finish.
The center bottom knob is original, but the other 4 are not.
The grillecloth is in nice shape, a little wear on the right bottom.
It also has a phono input with switch on rear of the chassis.

This is a 6 tube Black dial console, original finish, with many places the
finish has either worn or flaked.
Overall tight veneer, no dings or scratches penetrate the finish as to cause damage to the
veneer. The grillecloth is
excellent original. The speaker has no tears, and the chassis is rust free.
Excellent candidate for your next restoration.
Missing 2 top wooden Z knobs, others are correct originals. This could be easily
shipped via UPS.

Shutterdial Console
The striking feature is that the cabinet is half-round. The entire cabinet is walnut veneer, no photo finishes. It has a huge clipped corner chassis (so it will fit in the round cabinet), with 12 tubes including the eye, 3 position shutterdial and radiorgan.
"Striking half-round design in genuine walnut finish" reads the 1938 Zenith Catalog.
1939 was the first year that Zenith incorporated
pushbuttons into their radios. The left wing of the escutcheon
has 8 presets for automatic station selections. The right wing contains the on/off
buttons, and 6 tone buttons, labeled treble, normal, voice, bass, lo-bass, and alto.
These buttons can be pushed or pulled to allow up to 64 different tone
combinations.
As far as my restoration work, all was on the chassis. I have replaced all the
original capacitors with mylars, excluding the electrolytics, which are included with the
radio, see photo. Schematics are included. Replacement of eye tube harness wiring with
original type fabric covered wires. Replacement of the radiorgan button tabs, they
frequently deteriorate. Replaced the dialbelt, lubricated dial shafts. Added new fabric
covered line cord, with original plug intact. Reproduction parts included for the 16
buttons, and 16 Tabs, see photos. 8 of the tabs are for the presets, the 8 other for
on/off and the 6 tone buttons. The dial, volume and bandswitch also.
The huge "clipped corner" chassis is in very nice
shape, with a few discolorations. Inside had a family of mice once, leaving some stains. I
have all the tubes, which tested ok on my hickok. 6K7G RF, 6J5G oscillator, 6L7G mixer,
6K7G 1st IF, 6K7G 2nd IF, 6J5G 1st audio, 6J5G detector, 6F8G phase inverter, (2) 6V6G
push-pull audio output, 6E5 tuning eye and the 5Y4G
rectifier. Only 1 tube shield is included. The speaker has a small clean tear, easily
patched. The cabinet, as seen in the pictures, will need refinishing. The top left corner
has a gap (see pic), from the blocking behind it missing, which could be easily replaced.
The top curved section has a few hairline cracks, where the finish is flaking. Left base
veneer has a tiny 1/4 chip. The grille cloth panels, 3, will need new fabric, available in
the Zenith block pattern from grillecloth.com.
