- In which it is explained how Chester came to be a prince in disguise. -

by Zenyth (9/2000)

Though the jester Chester is very happy in his current course in life, it is known that he was not always quite so happy. For Chester, you see, is actually a prince in disguise. How he came to be this is a rather interesting story.

A long time ago, many months perhaps, Chester was known as His Royal Highness, Prince of Weird. It was merely a title, for Weird had long previously become a republic, but being a people for whom tradition was sacred, the position was maintained. Chester was perfectly happy with his princely duties (opening new rooms at the wizard school, or listening to old ladies every alternate Tuesday) and the people of Weird were happy to have it so.

It happened one day, however, that Chester, in the course of his duties, noticed a travelling jester called Kythie performing in the marketplace. He was instantly in love, but no matter what he did he could not get her to notice him. He tried walking past doing his most regal walk, and loudly proclaiming his position and (largely made-up) riches, but she did not turn once, and he left dejected.

With no-where else to go, he walked through the woods to Emme the Wizard's tower. It was a rather short tower, in actual fact rather like it had been flattened, but it had enough skulls and grimores lying about to look authentically wizardy. Being a prince, and a dejected one at that, Chester walked right in, finding Emme attempting either a very nasty scone recipe or a mild curse in the kitchen. Chester told her his predicament, and abandoning the flour and eggs, Emme set her mind to this new problem. Being a somewhat lazy wizard, Emme decided against walking the half-a-mile or so to the (substantially neater) tower of George, and this is probably why what happened, happened.
Now this is not to say that Emme isn't a good wizard, in fact, she was one of the top students in her class. But, she has a habit of complicating (or to the layperson, stuffing up) the most simple of magics and today was no exception.

After some thought, Emme had seen that the way to catch Kythie's attention was not through exhibitions of power but through humour. And so Emme had decided to change Chester into a jester, temporarily of course. A foolproof plan indeed. And so Emme created the spell, and Chester became a jester. And while Emme was preparing the reversal spell, Chester went off to the marketplace to see if the plan had worked.

And what a success it was. Kythie caught sight of Chester over the crowd and was instantly enamoured. And Chester was so enamoured of her that he forgot about the reversal spell and being a prince completely. Which was good, because just after Chester had left, George stopped by Emme's tower, and immediately the two wizards were deep in a discussion on the merits of chariot spoilers and the merits of rooftop conversation. And everyone was happy.

Note: I could say that this story has no references to persons living or dead but I would be lying. Oh well.
