A major step in
development of
transgenic animals --
animals genetically
engineered to bear
human genes -- has
been achieved by
GenPharm International,
a small Mountain View,
California based
biotechnology company.

Pharming’s key goal is to
use it's core technologies
to develop manufacture
and commercialize
therapeutic products for
the treatment of specific
human diseases.

The amount of human
lactoferrin in milk of 5 mice
ranged from 60 to 6,600
microg/ml when judged by
ELISA analysis. Three
mice expressed the
protein at the level higher
than 500 microg/ml.
These data suggest that
the genomic lactoferrin
sequence represents a
valuable element for the
efficient expression of the
protein in milk of
transgenic animals.

A transgene composed of
hLF coding sequences
fused to regulatory
sequences of the bovine
aS1-casein gene was
expressed exclusively in
the mammary gland and
only after the onset of
lactation.

Lactoferrin an orally
active protein produced
naturally in human milk,
has antibacterial, iron
transport, and other
important properties.

Hepatitus C virus (HCV) is
associated with the
development of cirrhosis
and hepatocellular
carcinaoma. We recently
found that bovine
lactoferrin, a milk protein
belonging to the iron
transporter family,
effectively prevented HCV
infection in cultured
human hepatocytes.

On occaision science has
had the opportunity to
surpass it's welcome into
society. Like the old
adage says, "Change is
bad." We now have the
ability to naturally produce
artificial lactoferrin. Expect
a recipient to say, "Excuse
me, you're giving me what
and it came from
where?...!
