For determining a hardware failure with a cd-rom. Does Windows see the
drive. If yes proceed to Troubleshooting steps A
if Not proceed to Troubleshooting steps B
Troubleshooting Steps
A
1. Is the drive able to read any cds. If so then specific cds
may be damaged or need to be cleaned. If No to the answer proceed to the
next step.
2. The drive is not able to read any cds. If you have multiple
drives such a cd-rom and Cd-rw or dvd-rom try the cd on another on of the
drives. If that drive is able to read the cd but the drive your having
problems with can't then try reinstalling the drivers for the cd-rom. If
this doesn't work proceed to the next step.
3. Try a lense cleaner for your cd-rom. If this doesn't work
proceed to the next step.
4. Apply hammer to cd-rom in frustration. Your drive is
defective.
Troubleshooting Steps B
1. Is this the only drive that is not showing up. If yes proceed
to next step if not and you have a cd-rom and cd-rw or cd-rw and dvd-rom
chances are that you either have a virus or that your secondary IDE
controller has failed.
2. This is the only drive that is not showing up. Check device
manager for conflicts. If there is no conflict proceed to 2a if yes
proceed to 2B.
2A Restart the computer and check the BIOS for the cd-rom. If
the drive is not showing in BIOS then the drive is defective. If it is and
Windows doesn't detect it try running the recovery and seeing if it will
read the recovery cd. If so then you may need to complete a recovery.
2B If there is a conflict with the bus masters or another device
remove them and restart the system and let Windows reinstall the device
and see if that corrects the issue. If there are still conflicts you may
want to consider running the recovery.
