Modems

Modems are very volatile they are very sensitive to power surges on phone lines.  If you're having problems with your modem after a big storm, chances are it's been hit by lightning.  There are a couple of things you can check for when your troubleshooting your modem.  First of all you need to check your phone line and make sure that the line going to the modem does have a dial tone.  You can do this by unplugging the line going into the modem and plugging a phone on the end of that line.  If it doesn't have a dial tone on the line chances are the phone line jack is bad.  If you do have a dial tone you could proceed to step two which is performing the modem dial tone test.  Make sure the phone line from the wall is plugged into the back of the modem in the jack that says "line"  it may have pictures etched in the metal of what it is instead of words.  If so just plug the line in opposite of the jack with the phone picture beside it.

Alright we have made sure the line is in the right place, now take another phone line and plug it in the "phone"  jack and make sure that you have a phone plugged into the end of that line.  If you pick up the phone hooked up through the computer we now have established the modem can perform the simple task of carrying a dial tone to the phone through your modem.  If you modem does not do this chances are it has experienced a power surge and needs to be replaced.  Did you get a dial tone?  Let's proceed with step 3.  Now we need to test for the modem software or drivers.  First we need to make sure that only one modem is installed on the computer to do this click on START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL.  Inside control panel there should be an icon in the that say modem.  double click on the MODEM icon.  Should open up to a general tab and have your modems installed on your computer there.

If you see more than one modem listed there that may be your problem.  Sometimes if you have a modem listed twice one of them is taking up resources and the other is basically a dummy.  Just sitting there taking up space.  If you are installing software like America Online on your computer the setup program is going to pick up the second modem listed there.  May be the wrong modem and will appear to be a hardware failure "meaning your modem does not work" .  To check for this make sure that if there are two modems listed there highlight the second one and click the REMOVE button.  It will then leave the first modem there.  Make sure you write the name of your modem that you have listed there.

Alright let's proceed to step 4.  There is a tab at the top that says DIAGNOSTICS right be side the General tab.  Make sure you click on the diagnostics tab.  You should see a window with your modem in it.  you may notice there are some COM#'s beside your modem.  If your modem is installed on COM1 chances are your modem was incorrectly installed.  Modems almost never select com1 to be installed.  If your modem is installed on com1 you need to click back on the GENERAL tab and highlight the modem and click REMOVE.  Now you have no modems installed so click ADD let windows search for your modem if it find a device and needs drivers for it, you click next until it asks you where to look for the drivers you can click on SPECIFY LOCATION in box type C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS sometimes you modem drivers are there.  If not you need to obtain your modem driver disk or cd.  If modem is installed on another com port continue.

Now highlight the COM# that is to the left of your modem listed there and click on the MORE INFO button.  The modem should return with results such as chipset, UART, IRQ  and in the white window it may have a bunch of ATT codes.  This is normal, that means we queried the modem and it responded back to us.  If you received a message such as PORT ALREADY OPEN or it froze your computer.  Or it gives you another kind of error chances are it's defective or has been installed incorrectly.  Click here is it has been installed incorrectly.  If it responded correctly let's continue.  Alright let's do a HyperTerminal test.  Go to the START menu then select PROGRAMS then ACCESSORIES then COMMUNICATIONS then HYPERTERMINAL.  If a name field pops up enter a name, doesn't matter what the name is as long as you fill in the blank, click and high light the yellow and read phone icon and click OK.  A CONNECT TO box should appear if not you have not done this correctly.  Click the cancel button on the CONNECT TO window to close it.  You should see a white screen now.  You may not be able to see what you type but type it anyway.  Type ATZ then enter it should respond back with a 0 or an OK if it doesn't you have a bad modem.  If it responded back correctly then let's proceed.  Now type ATDT1234567 then hit enter if it responds with an error or does nothing.  Make sure your volume is up on your speakers also make sure the volume is up on the yellow horn at the lower right hand corner in the task bar.  If you didn't hear your modem dial a phone number it's defective.  If you did your modem is ok.  Now let's see if it will try to connect.  try dialing with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) 's number this time.  Type ATDT and the number of your isp.  If you here a bunch of high pitch connection noises the modem is ok.  Your modem is no longer the issue it may be your phone line or ISP.  You have successfully Trouble Shot your modem.
