Monitor or Display Think you might have a bad monitor or display? Well let's see there are a couple things we need to decide. One what kind of problem do you have? Is it something that can be caused by something else? What can I do to make sure it is that problem? Well if you're having an issue with your monitor or display here are a couple of troubleshooting steps you can perform to make sure it is your monitor. Monitor has no power: Does the monitor power light come on at all? If yes Move on. If no, check to make sure that your power cables are plugged in tight and snug. if you have the monitor plugged into a surge protector. Try plugging the monitor straight into the wall. If that doesn't work, try taking the power cord from the monitor and switching with the power cord from the computer. They should have similar power cords. If that doesn't work then Chances are you have a bad monitor. The Monitor light comes on but it's yellow or amber: Check the cable from the monitor to the computer. Is the cable tight and snug? Usually if the monitor light comes on but turns yellow or amber it's not receiving a signal from the computer. Check the power on the computer itself does it's light come on? usually green. Are there any lights flashing? some possible cause of this kind of scenario could be that your monitor cable has a shortage of some sort. In that case you need another monitor. The other possible scenario is that the video card or onboard video on the computer is either not working or you are having more than just the video card issue. Do you have another monitor? try switching the monitors out see if the other monitor is having the same symptoms. Do you have another computer in the house? See if the bad monitor will work on the other computer. If yes then you have a bad video card and or system board. Could also have problems with the hard drive. Monitor power light comes on green but I don't have a display: Check to make sure your brightness and contrast settings are set correctly. If you have Children in the house chances are they are going to play with the computer an may have just adjusted the monitor till it seems to be a black screen. Are there lines running horizontally or vertically? Does it do this even from startup? If yes you probably have a bad monitor or bad video card and you should get them checked out. Monitor is fine except it has lines going through it: You need to check to make sure that it's the monitor that has the lines going through it. to do this you could switch out the monitor with another one and if same results it's probably the video card. If it doesn't have lines on the other monitor it's is a bad monitor. If you don't have another monitor to switch with you could check it by restarting the computer upon startup check to see if it has the lines on the logos if not it may be a software problem. Monitor's colors are inconsistent: Most of the time if you see the whole screen a tint of one color it's usually the monitor however we need to make sure that it is the monitor. To do this let's restart the computer. upon startup look at the logo screen are they awkward colors? If so it's not a software problem. Now to decide whether or not it's the video card. One way is to switch out the monitors and see if you get same result. however if you don't have that luxury you can try this. Usually monitors today have an onscreen menu. Press the menu button on the monitor this is independent of the computer and will reflect only the monitor screen. So if the menu is different colors that means that the monitor is in fact a bad monitor.
With monitors if you have lines going across, ghosting of the image or a bending of the picture check to make sure that you don't have any electrical devices around the monitor such as speakers, fans or a ups.
