Soror Myra Davis Hemmings

Myra Davis Hemmings was the first President of both Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and its first chapter, Alpha Chapter on the Howard University campus. The official Certificate of Incorporation bears her signature as President along with the signatures of the seven other officers who were also called the directors.

Soror Hemmings earned a Master of Arts degree in Speech from Northwestern University (IL). She became active in the NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women, and chartered the San Antonio (TX) Alumnae Chapter. She also served as Co-Chairman of the 19th National Convention in San Antonio. In 1963, she co-chaired Delta's Golden Anniversary Celebration, which was addressed by President John F. Kennedy. Soror Hemmings served Delta in many capacities, including Grand Vice President, always with scrupulous attention to the highest standards of womanhood and leadership.
