Soror Winona Cargile Alexander

Winona Cargile Alexander was born June 21, 1893 in Columbus, GA. She was the second oldest of four daughters born to the Rev. Charles C. and Fannie E. Cargile. Soror Alexander graduated from Ballad Normal High School in Macon, GA in 1910. and entered Howard University in the fall of that year. She was the first Custodian of Alpha Chapter. She taught school for one year before entering the School of Social Work at New York University. She was the first Black Social Worker with the New York City and New York County Charities. She went to Jacksonville, FL, where she became a social worker for "Colored Indigents" with the Duval County Welfare Board. She and her husband, Jacksonville attorney Edward L. Alexander, to whom she was married in 1917.
