  • Project completed : March, 2000 (I'm embarrassed at how long this project took)
  • I began this project as a simple enhancement to the backyard. We felt that the concrete patio that came with the house was harsh and unattractive. Solution, Install a Deck! Sounds easy, right? NOT!! I got about 90% done with this project within the first month or so, and then put it on hold. I had had enough! It was too hot, and too much work. It took until the next spring for me to be motivated enough to finish.

The idea was pretty simple. Just lay 2x2 supports on the existing slab and fasten the deck boards to it. Worked out pretty well. I was originally going to anchor the 2x2's, but decided that it would not do well with expansion and contraction, and was probably heavy enough that it won't shift. Good call so far. It saved me a ton of work and still looks great! I decided on the angled pattern to give it some character and depth. The step was to accommodate the settling of the soil around the slab. The step "hangs" from the main deck surface and is anchored on the outside edge with 4x4's set in concrete.

The deck gave exactly the look that we wanted and has been a fantastic addition to the property (now that it is finished)
