SHAMPOO words
These are literary words and the acronym "shampoo" is from my freshman year English class in High School.
- Simile
- A comparison of two unlike things using either the word "like" or the word "as"
- e.g., "Her hair is brown like a pine cone" is a simile.
- Hyperbole
- A great exaggeration
- e.g., someone carrying a heavy load might say "this thing weighs a ton!"
- Alliteration
- A few words in a row with the same beginning sound.
- e.g., "Take time to talk to Tim" repeats the 'T' sound several times in a row.
- Metaphor
- Like a simile two things are compared, but unlike a simile the words "like" and "as" are absent; one thing is being called another thing.
- e.g., "A pine cone is her hair color" another example might be "that car was a lemon" (this one might say if the car was defective).
- Personification
- Giving human characteristics to inanimate objects.
- e.g., "The tree shook its arms and the lilies danced in the wind." (Trees do not have arms, nor can lilies dance).
- Onomatopoeia
- A word that describes and sounds like a sound.
- e.g., "beep", other examples: "buzz", "zoom".
- Oxymoron
- Two contradicting words.
- Some examples are: "Working vacation", "Jumbo shrimp" "Truthful politician" (alright, the last one is just a joke since it is not always the case since Abraham "honest Abe" Lincoln was a politician.)
