RENATA, SISTER MARIA (GERMANY)

Executed for witchcraft  in Germany on June 21, 1749, Sister Maria was
accused of causing the possession of several nuns in her convent. She was
beheaded and her body thrown on a bonfire of tar barrels and wood. The
executioner, according to an eyewitness report, cut off her head so
dexterously that the onlookers roared their bravos in admiration.
