3 DAYS TO ROSE
BOWL:
TEXAS OFFENSE Texas offense
has been the focus of the team all season long. This is because of
two words and those two words alone: Vince Young. Vince Young
emerged on the national scene by his superman-esque performance in
the Rose Bowl a years ago against Michigan. He ran for four
touchdowns and thrown one. He brought the team back from down 10
points in the fourth quarter to win the game by one point. He was
the early Heisman candidate, and kept his name on the top of the
list till the end. He was one of only three Heisman candidate
invited to New York for the award presentation.
His playmaking ability has been the
one and only in college football. The game had never seen anyone in
this position play like this ever. He can make so many plays with
his legs. This year he even improved his passing game to become a
more complete quarterback. The highlight television stations keep
playing again and again was his pass to Limas Sweed for a touchdown
that took the lead in the Ohio State game.
Something the national media failed
to emphasize on is Vince's leadership. He has taken on the leader
role in the team. He is the leader of the whole football team, both
offense and defense. His vocal and jovial character brought cohesion
and harmony to the team.
Another thing the national media
failed to emphasize on is the rest of the offense. Not too many
people know how good this bunch is. The team can't come this far
without them. They deserve more credit than they are given.
Especially the offensive line. I haven't seen enough football to say
this, but I'm going to say it anyway. This offensive line is one of
the best in the nation, definitely the best since I have started
following this team since 2000. The line includes:
LT Jonathan Scott (first team All American), LG Casey Studdard, C Lyle Seidlein, RG Will
Allen (third team All American), RT Justin Blalock (third team All
American)
The running games, of quarterback Vince Young and of the running
back by committee, can't be where they are without the offensive
line. The lines are always doing the most important work and yet
receiving the least credit in the game of football.
The running backs are in my opinion
average, due to a lack of a single back to carry the load as the
feature back consistently. Junior Selvin Young started the season as
the starting tail back. He went down with injury early in the
season. True freshman and five star recruit Jamaal Charles took over
the starting job and performed great. Just when we thought we have
another great running back like Cedric Benson in his freshman year,
Charles got injured and was never 100% any point in the season.
Sophomore RB/WR/KR Ramonce Taylor (the Texas version of Reggie Bush)
took the tail back job and did decently. So at the end, there is a
running back by committee. Not a bad thing considering each back
brings different style to the game. Add to all this, there is a 300
pounds defensive end turned running back ("thunderback" coined by
ESPN) freshman Henry Melton. He mainly comes out for goal line
situation.
Last year the receiving corp was
consist of a bunch of wide receivers who drop balls as often as they
catch balls. I won't say this year we have a solid receiving squad
like we did a few years back with Roy Williams, B.J. Johnson, and
Sloan Thomas. But they are definitely underrated and unpredictable.
Limas Sweed and Billy Pittman emerged early as the prime targets.
Then towards the end of the season, Quan Cosby was thrown into the
mix. Each of them showed up in turn each game to make big plays.
The most consistent receiver in the
team has to be tight end David Thomas. He is the leading receiver on
the team with the most yards and touchdowns. Having a tight end as
talented as David Thomas can help the passing game so much and open
up the offense.
The Texas offense start with the most
important components of this side of the football, the quarterback
and the offensive line. I believe they are the most talented
positions on the team. The combination of running backs can throw
USC off guard. The depth at this position can allow us to keep bring
fresh legs to the field. David Thomas leads the receiving players
big plays after big play during the season. No individual receiver
has season numbers to be a star out of the group. Consistency was
the key in receiving. Their composure was undoubtedly shown in big
games like Ohio State and the come from behind win at Oklahoma
State. 1.1.06 |
