| The Big Yellow started out as a crappy band of new guitar playing 6th graders who just got together to play one song on 50s-60s day:purple haze by Jimi Hendrix. They sucked the Big Yellow one if you know what I'm sayin, but they were pumped because the crowd of preteens loved it. This unbelivably bad 4 piece band really was only a 3 piece later that year when they played the Waterown Middle School's annual family picnic, consisting of Auggie, Matt, and Jon. They palyed the worst covers possible of Nirvana songs, because they knew no other music. The Following year, Art Wallace, the director of the school concert band allowed the three to play at the winter concert following the band and chorus. Auggie, Matt, and Jon, jumped at the opportunity but realized that "Miles Away" by Goldfinger would sound fuller with an extra guitar, so they got Luke again, and soon after that performance, they played at the 50s-60s day, and then at the annual "Day of Respect" which was run by the "Respect for Differences CLub" where they played the Operation Ivy anthem "Unity." Auggie, Matt, Luke, and Jon played the spring picnic again, and now they were better, but still not very good at all, still playing strictly covers, and not really adding any creative touches. The following year was 8th grade for the lads, and after performing several great covers at the 50s-60s day which was now 50s-60s-70-s-80s day, including a rendition of "No Sleep till Brooklyn" by the Beastie Boys where Auggie and Matt rapped along with Corey Haddad, and the group adopted Metal Guitarist Joe Velez for his amazing solo skills. The boys kept playing off and on, but not much. Freshman Year came along and they adopted keyboardist/trombonist extrodinaire, Peter Coe. Peter seemed to be the missing link, once they got him, his musical talent made the rest feel like they actually wanted to practice, and become better....The Big Yellow is named after a very funny, very scandolous course of events, that cannot be expressed here in words, but it has evolved to be a great band of 5 guys who will surprise nearly everyone once they begin to hear what they can do with such cheap, beat up equipment. |
