Topic: Temptation Scriptures: Luke 4:1-8 Sunday, July 3, 2005 Message Delivery: Rev. Caleb Williams Notes provided by: Sis. Christine Powell/Sis. Jackie Knox
We all have to deal with temptation not because we are Christians, but because we were born into Satan's world. God's Word enlightens us to the tactics of Satan so we can win over temptation.
A. All temptations derive from selfishness. As long as the devil can keep you focused on 'self,' he can win. Therefore, we must explore the Spirit realm and let the Spirit lead us so the enemy doesn't have the power to defeat us. (I John 2:15-17, James 1:13-15)
B. The Holy Spirit on the inside of us alerts us when we are living beneath ourselves and beneath God's will for our lives. Don't get trapped in what the world views as good because the world will give you a misconception of the truth. (I John 2:15-17)
C. Few people learn to deal with temptation when faced with it. You can never not be tempted in this life, but you can stop yielding to it.
D. 3 principle things to prepare yourself to overcome temptation are as follows:
1. You must know who you are in Christ at all times. (Luke 4:3,9) Your real temptation is to doubt who you are. If Satan can make you doubt who you are, then he can get you to do anything.
2. You must be not only filled (initially) with the Holy Spirit, but full always. (Ephesians 5:18-19, Jude 1:20-22) When you're full you don't have room for the devil to come in.
3. You must counter every temptation of the devil with the Word of God. (Luke 4:4,8,12) Satan uses your ignorance to his advantage. So preparation in the Word is our power over the devil.
