Topic: Conscience Scriptures: I Timothy 1:18-20, 5 Sunday, November 29, 2004 Message Delivery: Rev. Caleb Williams Notes provided by: Sis. Jackie Knox
Paul tells Timothy that someone foretold of his calling and he confirms that he has a particular calling. He tells him to keep the faith and be of good conscience. One key to receiving God's blessings that is often overlooked is a good conscience.
A. Some definitions of conscience:
-- Bear witness of moral conduct; be conscious of conscience (Titus 1:13-16)
-- God-given instrument of discernment that prompts you to do right and avoid wrong
-- An inner voice that speaks according to one's knowledge of the standard of right and wrong
B. What God has to say to us is based on our learning style, our desire to hear and learn, and the amount of time we spend with Him.
C. Conscience is designed to govern our lives, but a good, clear conscience is one that is benevolent, profitable, useful, void of offense, and unspoiled from pollution of guilt and sin. Guilt and sin will cause your conscience to bother you. (John 8:3-11, Hebrews 10:22-23)
D. When your conscience is weak, wounded, or bothering you, it will undermine things and cause you to have doubts when you should have faith.
Keep a clear conscience, steering clear from sin. [DEFN: Sin = all unrighteousness; him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not; what is not of good faith; failing to give God your best.] (I John 3:20-22)
