Canvassing/Flyer
Distribution
Canvassing is an easy way to
spread out flyers.
If you want to distribute your
flyers to people's homes, you cannot
place the flyer in a mailbox. It's a federal offence. You can however
put the flyer in a paper (newspaper) box.
If there is a newspaper in the
box already, I slip it into the pages of
the newspaper. That way the flyer won't blow away or be thrown out
right away.
If there is no paper box
(which happens half the time) you can use a
rubberband to attatch a flyer to a person's front door of their house.
Before I start canvassing, I
usually set a goal for myself, like "I'm
going to (street name) and I'm gonna hand out (number) flyers today"
That way I can do one street on one day, then when I go out to canvass
again I know which street I've done already and I can do some other
street.
One really important thing
about canvassing: have your ID (driver's
license, school ID, whatever) on you when you go. People call the
police sometimes if they see you (some blue haired freak) walking
around their neighborhood. If you show the cops your ID and tell them
you're canvassing, they usually don't hassle you too much.
Another little tip: You can do
your neighborhood while you walk your
dog. Plus a dog seems to make you more approachable to people for some
reason. People who would never give me a second look stop to talk to me
when I'm walking my dog. I gave 2 old ladies a bunch of anti-bush
flyers today, all because they stopped me to say what a nice dog. Best
thing is, they hate Bush, too, and were gonna flyer the rec center for
me :)
Dogs and politics mix very
well indeed.
