BURNS- The family descend from a dynasty of XI century kings of the Irish province of Leinster, called Bran. They were known as the O'Byrne family or Byrne and were famous rebels against the English Pale. They were also known for creating a book of Irish poetry, the Liber Branach. My branch come from Derry Island, Castleblayney, County Monaghan., changing the name to Burns in the mid-1800's We lost contact with our family if you think we're related please contact. GERNON- The family descend from the norman ducal family that can be traced back to 44A.D and built many castles, churches and monasteries all over Normandy,England and Ireland.. Their stronghold was an impenetrable castle at Monfichet, Calvados, about 22 km south of Bayeux, where they were forester Barons of the Forest of Cerisy. They were cousins of William the Conqueror and participated in the 1066 invasion of England, becoming so heavily rewarded with holdings as to become one of the 15 largest landowning families after the conquest. After five years of the conquest, members of the family also took on the name De Monfichet, besides De Guernon or Gernon. Some members of the family were Magna Charta Barons, on both sides. Two members of the family went to Ireland, one with his uncle Strongbow on the Norman invasion of Ireland and the other as good friend and advisor of the King, both recieved many lands in the Pale and founded an Irish Gernon branch, This branch intermarried with Europe's oldest nobility, the O'Connors, Kings of Connaught and with the Burke's of Burke's Peerage and other aristocratic families. They built many castles and churches, some still remaining and were centered in Counties Louth and Meath: There were also two towns and parishes called Gernon's Town or Baile an Gherlainaigh in Gaeltacht. They were in power for about 700 years until the Cromwellian confiscations removed most of their land , as they remained Catholic and Loyalist. One branch from Ardee specialized as a medical family and produced an unbroken line of physicians now at the 8th generation, handing down the original tools. The English branch died out but the Norman branch produced a Count as late as the 1800's who was the French Minister of Education, living in a large castle at Ranville. The Irish Gernon branch still is going strong. You can read more on the Gernons at a website:http//. utenti.lycos.it/mary1943/index.htm or at www.oocities.org/pgarland6 There will be a worldwide Gernon -Garland reunion in the second week of July 2004 in Castlebellingham, Ireland, contact Pat Garland at: pgarland6@juno.com KLAWITTER-The family were already Dutch nobles around the year 1000, they went on the early crusades to Jerusalem and lived there until Saladin ousted the Christians, relocating to Prussia, where they became Prussian nobles.
