BACK TO THE POLE ...

01. Anything Else

Director: Woody Allen
Cast: Jason Biggs, Christina Ricci, Woody Allen, Danny DeVito
USA 2003 Colour 108 min
"...Frustrated Jerry (Jason Biggs) is no match for his hard-arsed agent (Danny DeVito) or the manipulations of his sexpot girlfriend, Amanda (Christina Ricci). In desperation, he befriends Dobel (Allen), a struggling comedy writer and gun nut who gives Jerry life lessons as they stroll through familiar Manhattan terrain. The Woodster laces this wry romantic comedy with his trademark gags and acerbic one-liners, revisiting themes from Hannah and Her Sisters and Annie Hall. De Vito and Channing (playing Amanda's batty and catty mother) offer some sublime moments but Ricci steals the show as the narcissistic temptress..." This is a himiliating comedy of Woody Allen. A typical expression of his view to love with a different storyline of presentation. Jerry is an interesting character, a typical person without any motive in life to drive for goals and dreams. In a sense, he can be a happy-go-lucky character in real world with a stable profession and family. It's Dobel, his spiritual prophet that donates him the move from his day amd night life to a new horizon with passion and dream to fulfil. The dialogue of Anything Else is definitely marvelous. Amanda is an attractive character living, again, in her world of love. She is sexy and insecured. She aims not for any responsibility or bondage of relationship. She is much like another form of living. She is free and passionate but she can be lonely too. It's the different forms of human that make a life so unique and special, but as said in the film twice, "it's just like anything else". (8/10)
