"...The title, with its evocations of remoteness or rejection, muses over
the failure of physical proximity to bridge emotional chasms. Mahmut is a divorced
photographer living an obsessively ordered life in Istanbul. When his jobless
cousin Yusuf from his hometown moves in with an empty American dream, the urban
cynicism of one grates on the rustic naivete of the other. Their spiritual insularity
is encased in a snow-imprisoned cityscape, by cinematography with the pristine
clarity of still photos. Compared with Tarkovsky, Antonioni and Angelopoulos after
Distant swept the Grand Prix and Best Actor awards at Cannes, Ceylan has come
