BACK TO THE POLE ...
-- Album of the Year (2002) -- Compilation of the Year (2002) -- Most Disappointed Album (2002) -- Gig of the Year (2002) -- Debut of the Year (2002)
01
<< Geogaddi >> - Boards of Canada (Warp)
The album of the year! Boards
of Canada is like the angels of electronica. Entering into their music,
you are like losing in the hexagonal puzzle of the electronica music. Their
music is lovely, with an atmosphere of spacious land, endless skyline, territory
without boundary. Listening to their sound, I think of the Spielberg's A.I.,
similar foggy scenes, and the Boards of Canada drives you to an eternal destiny.
Also re-released in 2002 is their debut vinyl album - Twoism.
02
<< The Coral >> - The Coral (Deltrasonic Records)
Shocking music presented by the
Coral. This is the most exciting album of the year. A long awaited stimulation
to band sounds. Coming from Hoylake, near Liverpool, the band calls upon the
"revival" of the liverpool psychedic rock. Their music comprises composite
ingredients with brilliant construction of music architecture. The debut album
is really short, not only because it's short, but it's also too short for good
music. I would say the Coral introduces rippling noise to the music of 2002.
Cool!
Hear their singles -- "Goodbye" ...
/ "Skeleton Key" ...
03
<< The Music >> - The Music (Hut Recordings)
While we have the Coral in 2002, the
Music is another debut which I like most! Psychedic tunes with the mixing of
electronica, the Music seems to be the new generation Stardom. The tune "Too
High" is really high. Their performance makes me think of "the 21st
century U2".

04
<< ( ) >>
- Sigur Ros (Fat Cat)
Without a word, without an explanation, without a prelude of what the next step would be, with only sensational sounds of excellence. Sigur Ros extends its icy tunes to a ex-swimming pool studio and construct another non-stoppable album of sorrow. A cannot-be replaced music unit of the 21sth century.
05
<< The End of the Way It's Always Been >> - Jack (Crepuscule)
A long-awaited album from Jack. The third album of Jack, which is released by Crepuscule, a French record. Jack is still fine, without too much changes, and this time, Anthony, drunk, reduces the use of symphony & orchestra in their music. This release is their truful sound to the world in a new century. Not trying to decorating much the tunes, the recording of the album reveals a more lively Jack. Playing in "The Emperor of New London", Anthony is like giving a revenge to their previous Records...Jack can still be the best, and well, I won't care... Listening to Jack is like cleaning the dust from the deep heart...memory is already the life.
Also refer to the recent review of Jack's life in Spain ...
06
<< Evil Heat >> - Primal Scream (Columbia)
Continue to be powerful and going forward, with strong basslines, the Band demonstrate the sound of garage-rock and dancing grooves. Brillant!!!
07
<< A Hundred Days Off >> - Underworld (V2)
Happy to hear from the Underworld again after the departure of Emerson. Underworld does not become old. Karl and Rick make a step and continue the legand of the Underworld. The percussions are one of the great components in their latest release.
08
<< Riot Act >> - Pearl Jam (Epic)
Surprisingly, this is the most touching album in 2002 for me. Can't imagine for how long have I been listening to Pearl Jam. Without all the grunge look or stardom coverage on headlines, Pearl Jam stays in their position to do their music. "Riot Act" is their album that has the best tunes. Vedder is still an idol that cannot be replaced.
09
<< The Private Press >> - DJ Shadow (Island & Mo' Wax)
Entro...ducing...D...D...D J...Shadow...do...do...do...After the epic in the 90's, DJ Shadow brings along the second official album in 2002. A strengthening control of sound and mix, the Private Press is a good listening experience. With or without Wong Kai Wai, "Six Days" is already the single of the year. The sitar tune and the mystery mood make me drowned. So what will be the next, Shadow?
10
<< Yanqui U.X.O. >> - Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Constellation)
As the leader of the Montreal post-rock scene, the GYBE releases their biennual album at the end of 2002. Keeping on their music skeleton, the band spends more effort on the building of waving atmosphere of post-rock tunes. Also a tribute to the bombers and the bombings, a sense of anti-war on the album cover.
11
<< The Last Boardcast >> - Doves (Heavenly)
Restart the journey from the "Lost Soul". Doves spent another year to record this Last Boardcast. A totally different mood from the previous great works, the Last Boardcast is like a carnival of the year. A vivid sing-a-long, a power to start all over again, the three guys bring 2002 a rest of emotion but an extension of happy moments. A surprise from them as well to play the "Moodchild" of King Crimson.
12
<< Come with Us >> - The Chemical Brothers (Freestyle Dust &
Virgin)
It began in Afrika...The fourth album of the Chemical Brothers, and this is the release to bring all the brothers and sisters to the dance floor...hey boys hey girls...today the Chemical Brothers show you how to forget your rountine work on a hotty dancing floor, and stay tune of the Afrika drums with non-stop hi-freq basslines.
13
<< Don't be Afraid of Love >> - Lo-Fidelity Allstars (Skint)
The return of the Lo-Fidelity Allstars has been a most touching moment in early 2002. On the first day of the year, I was happy to be with them in HK. Lessening the previous nu-psychedical & skunk rock-oriented music-style, the LFA develops to be another dance floor master. Revealing from their previous DJing at the Big Beat Boutique, the band comes again with a mastering control of dancing live music. Though I am still feeling nostalgic about their previous works, I am still glad to have them in this year, just like meeting with an old friend.
14
<< Murrary Street >> - Sonic Youth (Geffen)
A Post 911 Album of the Band, a retrospective move to song-based works with layers of audio effect. A welcoming return, the sound is much like the period of "Washing Machine" while the architechure is more mature and just-in-the-mood.
15
<< Between the Senses >> - Haven (Radiate)
A debut of the Haven. Without winning much respect as an important debut, the band shows its talent in constructing nice tunes and much sensation. Produced by Johnny Marr, the guitar ssound is soulful. Looking forward to the second hit of the band.
16
<< A Kind of Closure >> - Tram
The third album of Tram, a year and a half for each. The Tram presents this time their finest works fusioned with avant-jazz and touching mood. This is the best of their work, I would say. (Listening to "Three Years ...)
17
<< I to Sky >> - JJ72 (Lakota)
Be they Billy Corgan No. 2, the new Smashing Pumpkins or a Radioheady fellow, JJ72 brings us a new experience of their sound...quite a difference from their previous debut... more diversified attempt to make use of their audio works, and this time the "I to Sky" is like a modern prayer for all of us. Good try!
18
<< Frantic >> - Bryan Ferry (Virgin)
The older the wine, the better the taste. Still charismatic tunes from Bryan Ferry, "Frantic" is like having a kittle cup of wine on a sunset beach.
19
<< Planet Helpless >> - Puressence (Universal Island)
A rather low profile band that I like much. After their last release years ago, they make a new works to this helpless planet...
20
<< Optometry >> - DJ Spooky (Thirsty Ear)
With DJ Spooky, this is one of the freest avant-jazzy epics of the year. The album also features Matthew Shipp, William Parker, Joe McPhee, and Guillermo E. Brown.
21
<< Bunkha >> - Paul Oakenfold (Mushroom & Perfecto)
The Debut solo by Paul Oakenfold, the perfecto DJ in the world!! A diamond casting, the album features a good mixing of song-based music. This is the magic of popularity!!
22
<< Sea Change >> -
Beck (Geffen)
Rather laidback, and back to the root of folk. A sentimental time, but I still prefer his innovative breeding of sounds & tunes before.
23
<< Have you Fed the Fish? >> - Badly Drawn Boy (Twisted Nerve)
The second release of the Badly Drawn Boy. A little less impact, but still a well demonstration of the talent of the Manchester song-writer. Some of the tunes recap the music of the Beatles, an easy listening at the end of the year.
24
<< Original Pirate Material >> - The Streets (Locked On)
One of the Hype of the year to me. But there do have some good tunes in the album, and the Streets is the nowadays spokeman of the England urban streets.
25
<< Trust - Low >> (Rough Trade)
Low, still low, trust, still with a
trust. This is the homework done by the Low in 2002.
By the way, I feel missing every Christmas without listening to their Christmas
songs slow and low...
26
<< See this Through and Leave >> - The Cooper Temple Clause (Morning
Records)
A new band from Reading! The Cooper Temple Clause releases their power-riff early this year. With clapping response, they are the new faces in 2002 that play powerful chords and young music in UK. Hope they are not just a come-and-go bypasser.
27 << el objeto inexistente >> - la muneca de sal (Everlasting Records)
A moody double album from a Spanish band with an elegant landscape of sound...a good listening experience in the evening.
28 <<
Is a Woman >> - Lambchop (Merge Records)
A representative of heart music, the album again shares the sentiment of Lambchop to the listener, like a warm milk in the afternoon.
29
<< Style Drift >> - Fontanelle (Kranky)
A jazzy performance by the stylish Fontanelle with its rhythm tuning to the finest, an art piece - and a transformation from the previous Jessemine of the 90's.
30
<< Back to Mine >> - MJ Cole (DMC)
One of the "Back to Mine" series, this time by MJ Cole, with continuous tunes of hie garage works and mixing. Back to MJ Cole.
