2001.04.05        Germany Sights Definitive Coil Stamp

With the introduction of the EURO on 1 January 2002 it has become necessary to display the most important denominations of the definitive series in both pfennigs and EURO. These stamps remain valid after 1 July 2002. Two more values new definitives were issued on April 5 for this purpose.

The first stamp is valued at 47 pfennigs/ € 0.24, depicting the hillside park Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel is scheduled to replace the former 47 pfennigs postage stamp "European Monument Berus". Wilhelmshöhe is considered to be one of the most important cultural creations of the 18th century. The building represents a scene from the world of Greek mythology, while the grounds form a complete harmonious unit with the Wilhelmshöhe Palace situated below in the park, which is now a museum housing the famous Old Masters gallery as well as a significant collection of antiques.

The second stamp, valued at 80 pfennigs/ € 0.41 to replace the 80 pfennigs "Zollern II Mine Dortmund" , featured the Protestant church of St. Reinoldi. St. Reinoldi is the oldest mediaeval church in Dortmund - a jewel of late gothic architecture. According to records from the Middle Ages, the first sacred building on the site of today's St. Reinoldi's church was built in the early 9th century. After the church fell victim to one of the large town fires in 1232, the apse, nave and transepts of today's building were built in the second half of the 13th century. After an earthquake in 1640 the first cracks appeared in the tower and collapsed in 1661, destroying a large part of the church. From 1662, the tower was rebuilt according to a design of Johann Degener and is now crowned by a Baroque onion-shaped dome. In World War II St. Reinoldi was reduced to a shell. The church was reconsecrated in 1956 after it had been rebuilt.
