2001.08.01  Uruguay Scenery Series - Penitente Waterfall
Urugury Post released on August a $2 definitive featuring the scenery of Penitente Waterfall. The stamp is designed by Carlos Menck Freire, with initial printing-run of 500,000.

Twenty-five kilometers far from Minas (captial city of the Department of Lavalleja), starting from Route 8 (kilometer 134), an upward 10-km ballast track takes to the Salto del Penitente. Though winding and stony, it is worth going along sightseeing. A final path for peasants leads to the basis of the fountain, There it can be seen the waterfall of the stream that rises from the Hill called ‘Penitente’. Only crows inhabit the area. It is however allowed to climb the rocks, and have an exciting experience. The area may be reached by car or on foot – the latter is exclusive to bolds. It is possible to camp by the water fall… picnics are frequent, provided that no rubbish is left nor vegetation is burnt in the place, these in order to duly protect the environment.
