2001.08.09 Australia Desert Birds
Definitives
The four 45c stamps released on August 9 are the latest definitive stamps
in the Nature of Australia series that began in 1996. Each issue in this
series features a different habitat and shows characteristic creatures
or plants found within that habitat. The new issue introduces the desert
habitat using the specific theme of Desert birds of the Little Sandy Desert,
Western Australia. The birds are: Variegated Fairy-wren (malarus lamberti),
Painted Firetail (emblema picta), Crimson Chat (epthianura tricolor)
and Budgerigar (melopisittacus undulatus).
The new issues are available in gummed and self-adhesive stamps (sheetlets
of five, booklets of ten and twenty, rolls of 100 and 200), and more, instead
of individual booklets of ten, a test of a new system is done with
this issue with twenty booklets of ten x 45c stamps bounded in a 'cheque
book' like format from which individual books will be sold.
