On June 4th, AusPost introduced the new issue of deset habitat consisting
of 4 stamps. The stamps show the the landscape and habitat of the Great
Sandy Desert. Spinifex grass is used as a motif connecting the designs
which are: 50c Desert star flower; $1.00, Bilby; $1.50, Thorny devil, and
$2.00 Great Sandy Desert.
The Great Sandy Desert is in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. It covers almost 400,000 km sq. or 5.1% of Australia. The region consists mainly of sand plains and dunes covered with spinifex and patches and desert oak. This landscape is relieved by emergent sandstone hills and chains of ephemeral salt lakes. The desert habitat was introduced in August 2001 with the Desert Birds
issue, this definitive issue of four stamps is the fourth in the Nature
of Australia definitive series, the first was released in 1996.
