The 37-cent Purple Heart definitive stamp was released in a pressure-sensitive
adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 on May 30, 2003, in Mount Vernon, Virginia. The
stamp, designed by Carl T. Herrman, Carlsbad, California, and photographed
by Ira Wexler, Bethesda, Maryland, goes on sale nationwide May 30, 2003.
This stamp honors the sacrifices of the men and women who serve in the
U.S. military. The president of the United States awards the Purple Heart
badge to members of the U.S. Military who have been wounded or killed in
action. According to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, an organization
for combat-wounded veterans, the medal is "the oldest military decoration
in the world in present use and the first award made available to a common
soldier."
