Zodea's Diary
November 27, 1999
This is my first time to write in this book. Mrs. Dallas gave it
to me when I left the master's house. She said that someday,
I'd look back and
want to remember the times ahead of me. I
will try and write here when I can.
She was kind enough to me,and probably knows more than I do. Plus I find myself
with many unexpressed feelings in my head. Perhaps this will help me make sense of my life.
My name is Zodea. I grew up in as a slave in my Master's house. Just a few weeks ago,
he closed up the house where I had lived and worked for as long as I can remember. Those
who were servants were given a small pension and set out to make do on their own. The other
slaves were I believe set free with a similar pension. I somehow ended up sold to Master
Nystil. Mrs. Dallas said I shouldn't complain, as he seems a kind enough young man. But I'm
not so certain. I was so close to having my freedom. But Mrs. Dallas says that 'freedom' is
not necessarily easy. With no family, and no one to help me, it might be very difficult for
me to find a suitable position in life.
Sigh, so for now, here I am. I have not figured out how my life is to be structured. For
instance, my new master recently sent me on an errand into to town. I needed to pick up
something from Lord Eisenhower. I had never been on my own like this before, so I was very
nervous. Fortunately, there were people to accompany me on my journey.
As seems to be normal of late, Ignot Martok tagged along in his nice little disguise. He
looked almost like a miniature monk. I'm not sure exactly why he likes me; perhaps, we have
more in common than I realize. Next came Maxwell-Falconi who for some reason seemed to think
I needed someone to protect me (of course he may have been right). Nimblus on the other also
had a reason to meet Lord Eisenhower. Nimblus is a talented locksmith so I was curious as to
why his services might be needed.
We arrived at Lord Eisenhower's manor with out any major problems. It seems there is some type
of a curfew in the city. I think the only reason that was nicely resolved is Nimblus seemed
to have the appropriate papers. When we got to Lord Eisnhower's manor, he had other 'guests'.
They were rather intimidating and spoke of Lord Eis needing 'protection'. I didn't
understand the whole thing, but it seems that there have been problems in some of the out
lying areas of town. Farmer Alan's daughter had been stolen by one of the elder Hags, and
then was killed himself. It sounds like a certain Lt. Rengal is now providing that protection.
But Lt. Rengal looked, talked and moved exactly like Whitey. Whitey is an albino herbalist
I had met while gathering plants for my master one day. Shrug, I do not understand that one at all.
Lord Eis had a box for Nimblus to open. I could hear a strange ticking sound coming from
within the box. But somehow he never got around to opening the box when I was there. Now
that I think of it, I think Nimblus had tucked the box in his cloak when we went outside.
I wonder what happened to it then?
Eventually, I was able to pick up a small scroll from my master. I didn't see anything
particular about this scroll, but the method of delivery was a bit discerning. The scroll
was found on a dead body. But what I saw would indicate it had been dead for a very long
time. Actually, the scroll is equally old. It's most interesting that they weren't both
long decayed.
Well, I got the scroll and started back to Master Nystil. On the road, we met up with the
strangest set of circumstances. The day turned into the darkest night much to soon. The
ground seemed to turn into metal. And then there was this incandescent man with blood red
eyes and with him some other person, covered in blood, who seemed to know Maxwell. I didn't
understand what happened, I'm not sure I want to. Maybe someday I'll have the nerve to ask
Max what was going on.
And then everyone was attacking this shining guy. I was so terrified. I could hardly
breathe. Then I did something very stupid. I caste a spell at the man. And I hit
him... and then he ran away. Suddenly I felt like everyone was looking at me. I was
truly terrified then. I couldn't stand it. I thought these people where my friends, but
now they had seen me attack someone with my magic. I lifted my skirts and ran away as
fast as I could. Hoping my new master could save me from their wrath. Magic as we all
know is outlawed in this land. I had no desired to be burned or lynched or even see their
accusing stares.
