Twelve years ago, Stasya had asked one last wish from her father. And in doing so, had defied her brother who would be the new king before sunset. She wanted to be a bard. In her home land a bard was much more than a wandering minstrel. They were the official historians of the land. More importantly, they spoke with the kigh. Kigh are likened to elementals. And it was the kigh of the air that were her almost constant companions. For you see, Princess or otherwise, Stasya was born blind. Yet she had some hidden seed of talent that allowed her to hear and speak with the air kigh. |
Now kigh are mischievous, but they are also curious. And they led Stasya through life not with the steps of a blind woman but with each step surely led by the information the kigh gave her.
Well, Stasya did become a bard. Her brother was furious. In fact, he placed numerous ‘restrictions’ on the sister he had once loved. For starters, she was never to marry, never to bear children. But as a young girl Stasya had no qualms. She learned to be a bard. In fact she learned she could speak to more than the air… also the earth, water and fire elementals. She left behind life as a princess and became a ‘simple’ bard. She literally walked the land from one end to the other. Bringing news to isolated villages, help to fishing fleets, love and laughter wherever she went.
Then one day… her brother, who was an ambitious king, declared he was expanding trade to the far reaches of the world. He no longer wanted Langador to be an isolated independent land. He requested bards be sent out to other lands and open trade negotiations. Trade that would ultimately bring riches to his kingdom.
Stasya volunteered to be one of those who went. Her brother the king protested, but in truth, the bardic hall was antonyms from the king. And with her talents, Stasya made an excellent emissary. For the kigh listened and helped her as they helped no other. Making communication between her and the bardic hall a simple matter as speaking to the kigh and requesting they deliver her message.
But the story does not end here. The King chaffed at the fact his sister defied him further. He proclaimed the bards in foreign lands to no longer be bards of the kingdom. Simply merchants who in truth were growing rich from their trade. For most this was a welcome change, but for Stasya, it meant she no longer had the protection of the guild. She once again became a sister to an ambitious king. And rumors abounded that she would make and advantageous marriage with in the year.
Stasya knew not what to do… but she did know one thing. A bard gave up their possessions… having no need for them in their simple wandering lifestyle. But she was no longer a bard. She claimed her rather massive inheritance and set off to spend it in those way which would most greatly infuriate her brother. And indeed… building a temple to some foreign god of thieves would cause a Royal tantrum… and she loved it. Of course, as a bard, Stasya had lost a lot of the ‘prejudices’ normally found in a young princess. Because of her desire to avoid her brother, she spent little time in the capital. Instead seeking out isolated parts of the country where over time she had become just another bard… not a princess. | ![]() |
