Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus is a great game with great graphics.  You are Hocus (forename) Pocus (Last name), a young wizard's apprentice, who lives in a strange dimension called Lattice.  Evil has aroused there, causing much unrest.  You, being the lively young wizard that you are, wish to join the council of wizards, the most esteemed form of government in the land.  Unfortunately, its leader, Terexin the high wizard, does not think you are worthy.  To prove your worth, he says, you mast travel to the distant corners of Lattice and destroy the evils that plague it people.  To make matters worse, you cannot marry your true love until you are on the council of wizards.  No one has ever survived, says Terexin smiling.  I trust it will be the same with you.  Please go now!  Armed with only your pocket-sized lightning spell, you set off for the linking paths, that will transport you to the different times and places in Lattice…
Hocus Pocus is a great platformer with a real funny story (you gotta read it!).  All four episodes take place within different castles, but you see the outside through the windows, which isn't great, but sets the scene for a small fairy-size wizard colony in another world.  The graphics are great, with the many different scenes in the castle, and the numerous enemies.  Its even a little 3D in some aspects, not REALLY, but the illustration of Hocus during gameplay is quite elaborate.  The controls are pretty simple, left, right, jump, and shoot., and really creates a nice feel.
The gameplay is great, with no species of monster the same, and they all move and strike in different ways, so as to keep you moving.  The only annoying part, is when you are half-way through the level, and you are jumping on ledges across a lava pit, and you fall in.  In other games, your health would go down bit by bit, giving you just enough time to run through the lava to the other side, therefore just escaping alive.  However, in Hocus Pocus, any Lava Pit is usually banked with high walls, so if you fall, you might as well just stand there and wait to die (it happens a lot).  Though the game is mainly action,  it has a slight puzzle aspect too, such as the switch combinations to guess, and the occasional maze.
The sound is nice, though it could use some music (I think every game should have music), but what's there is nice, the "Ziiiiiiiewwww!" of your "pocket-sized lightning bolt spell" is a little nerve-grating at times, but overall adds to the gameplay.  Besides that, there really isn't much sound, which proves to be a bummer, but, you'll live.

Overall, Hocus Pocus is a game with astounding graphics and gameplay that deserves a 5 out of 5.  I don't know why, but it just lacks a little "oomph" to make it great.  I give it a
3.9 out of 5

I am really, really sorry, but because of this game not working on my old comp., (it worked at my friends') I cannot take any screenshots of this game at the moment.  Please bear with me, I'll get some soon.
