RUNES – The Whispered Secrets

 

Mystery surroundings the rune alphabet which originated among the Nordic people of Europe. The word “rune” means secret writing.

 

1. FEON – The symbol is devoted to the god Frey. It pertains to possessions and wealth, inviting meditation on responsibly dealing with power and material aspects.

 2. UR – The mythological Primal Ox expresses raw, untamed energy. The power of the individual is united with collective power. Great forces are at work for the common good.

 3. THORN – Related to the god THOR, the power of this symbol defends all that challenges order. Symbolizing lightning, it stands for dramatic changes for the better in fortune or life itself.

 4. OS – This is the rune of Odin symbolizing the force of the creative wisdom and knowledge as expressed in words in the form of speech, song, lore, legend or ancient custom.

 5. RAD – The motion of the wheel and chariot connecting and transferring energy and ideas from here to there expresses the notion of the right thing in the right place at the right time.

 6. CEN – The flame of the pine torch expresses the idea of regeneration through transformation. Power of fire tempers metal as well as human passion standing for sexuality and regeneration.

 7. GIFU – The mystery of sacrifice to god or freely giving to fellow humans strengthens bonds. Brings fortune to society at large. Extends to a private, magical or business relationship.

  8. WYN – Expresses the moment of harmony within a chaotic world. The focus is one the point of balance between many opposing forces. A moment of creativity and well being.

 9. HAGAL – This rune expresses the unyielding structure which is fundamental to any achievement. Many aspects have to join into one force. This can cause delay and frustration.

10. NAWT – This rune symbolizes the mystery of need. Understanding needs itself expresses recognition of one’s own imperfection and the striving for self-improvement.

11. IS – Ice freezes the liquid energy of water, creating a state of inertia. Nothing can prosper, relationship ends, fortunes stagnate. Only fire can melt ice and rekindle change.

12. YER – All of nature relates to the cycle of time and life. Seasons come and go. Fortunate are those who understand this union between earth and universe and hence act accordingly.

13. YR – This is the rune of death. It represents the yew-tree, a slow growing tree with poisonous leaves and berries which were used for dangerous shamanic medicine.

14. PEORTH – Although all humans are subject to the laws of nature, all have free will and can change their destiny by applying will-power, energy and force. Fate does not demand submission.

15. AKZI – This rune stands for the forces which protect from attack of other human beings. It denotes the notion of a peaceful sanctuary and expresses optimism in the future.  

16. SIG – This rune symbolizes the sun and all its positive power. As the sunlight illuminates darkness, the symbol stands for the forces of victory, healing and divine guidance.

17. TIW – Symbolizing the arrow of war, this rune stands for the raw forces necessary to bring order into chaos. In the face of self-sacrifice, success, victory and happiness will follow.

18. BIRCA – The birch-tree is a symbol of birth and rebirth. The rune denotes the completion of one cycle and the beginning of new one. The new cycle stands for purity and purification.

19. EOH – This rune represents the horse and its relationship with the rider. The bond between them needs trust, understanding and goodwill as well as intuitive interchange.

20. MAN – This rune gives recognition to the fact that all humans are mere mortals. However, this reality does not preclude a sense of shared divinity within the universe.

21. LAGU – This rune symbolizes the dark forces of the subconscious mind. The surface of water does not reveal depth nor does the conscious expression reveal hidden fears or desires.

22. ING – This rune represents the god Ing and is associated with fertility. It stands for a happy & peaceful domestic environment, conductive to a large and prosperous family.

23. ODAL – This rune symbolizes all the beneficial aspects of place, homeland and homestead. It stands for the physical and spiritual heritage of the place one calls “home”.

24. DAG – Symbolizes the course of a day: awaking at the beginning, working during, and resting at the end of. It becomes a metaphor of life itself: youth, middle and old age.
